If you’re a regular at Ashburn Core Pilates, you know the satisfying glide of the Reformer carriage and the deep, challenging work of the Chair. You’ve come to love the support, the resistance, and the feedback the springs provide. So, when you saw "Mat Pilates" pop up on our new schedule, you might have thought, “Isn’t that for beginners?” or “Is that as good of a workout?”
It’s a common thought, but it’s time to let you in on a little secret - one that will fundamentally change the way you see your Pilates practice.
Mat Pilates isn’t a step down, it’s the foundation. It’s the source. And for many, it’s the ultimate, and most challenging, expression of the Pilates method. It’s the missing piece you didn’t know you needed to truly master your strength.
The Pilates Misconception: Apparatus vs. Mat
For years, the sleek and impressive look of the Reformer, Cadillac, and Chair has made them the face of modern Pilates. They’re incredible tools that can guide, support, and challenge the body in profound ways. But here's a crucial piece of history: Joseph Pilates created his original system of exercises, which he called "Contrology," on the mat.
He invented the apparatus later, primarily to assist people in finding the correct muscles and alignment to perform the matwork. The springs and straps were designed to teach your body what it felt like to engage from your center so you could eventually perform the exercises on the mat with nothing but your own body for support.
The end goal was never the machine. The end goal was always the mat.

The Surprising Challenge: Why Mat Work is Harder Than You Think
So, why does an exercise with no springs or straps often prove to be more difficult?
1. You Are the Machine
On the Reformer, the springs provide resistance, but they also provide support and feedback. They guide your limbs through space and help you maintain form. On the mat, there’s nowhere to hide. You are responsible for creating your own resistance and, more importantly, your own stability. You must support the weight of your own limbs in space, which requires an immense amount of core strength and total body control.
2. Deeper Core Connection
Without the external feedback of a footbar or a strap, you are forced to go internal. You have to rely on your own proprioception, your body's awareness in space, to ensure you are moving with precision and control. This builds a deeper, more intuitive connection to your powerhouse (your abs, lower back, hips, and glutes) that you simply can't achieve in the same way with external support.
3. It Unmasks Your Weaknesses
The Reformer can sometimes help us "cheat" or compensate for imbalances. The structure of the machine helps keep us in alignment. The mat is an honest teacher. It will immediately reveal where your weaknesses and imbalances lie. By forcing you to confront these areas, matwork empowers you to correct them, leading to more balanced strength and functional movement that translates directly into your daily life. This awareness can also help you improve your Reformer practice, as you start to build a stronger core and consistently correct your form.
How Mat Work Supercharges Your Reformer Practice
This isn't an "either/or" conversation. The true magic happens when you integrate both practices. The strength, control, and deep core awareness you build on the mat will make your Reformer and Chair work infinitely better.
You’ll understand the why behind each exercise on a deeper level.
You’ll find you can use lighter springs on the Reformer with more control, a true sign of advanced practice.
Transitions will become smoother, and your endurance will skyrocket.
Think of it this way: The mat builds your engine from the inside out. The apparatus helps you fine-tune it and take it for a powerful ride. By neglecting the mat, you're missing the key to unlocking your body's full potential.
